Comics are going through revolution and evolution. No longer defined and confined by paper technology, they are escaping from the page and exploring the infinite canvas of the internet and other platforms. Developing into different digital forms and formats, the medium is mutating by incorporating animation, sound, interactivity and multi-cursal storytelling to become hypercomics, motion comics, and potentially something entirely new. Chloe Martin, UK Manager of Panel Nine, reveals the creative opportunities which the iPad app version brings to cutting-edge children’s weekly The Phoenix. Dan Tucker, Digital Director of Medikidz, offers insights into the making and marketing of educational digital comics to explain health issues through the superhero genre. Experimental artist David Blandy previews Helix, his latest web-based multi-linear graphic novel, in collaboration with cartoonist Dan Locke and geneticist and TV presenter Adam Rutherford, to present the history and future of DNA.
