The Art of Animation Design
Wednesday 4th July 2018, 17:00 - 18:00
Showroom Cinema 4Read session report
In this session picture book author-illustrator Leigh Hodgkinson will discuss the creative process behind her design work, and how it extends in to animation. As co-creator and art director of CBeebies show ‘Olobob Top’, Leigh’s work shows how using a limited palette and library of shapes can be liberating and limitless.
‘Olobob Top’ is a pre-school animated series broadcasting on CBeebies (UK), S4C (Wales), ABC (Australia), YLE (Finland), Disney (Japan) and other territories around the world. The series encourages creativity and problem-solving in young children through imaginative play with shapes. Along with her husband, Beakus founder Steve Smith, Leigh is currently working on series 2 of ‘Olobob Top’ from their studio in Lewes.
Leigh also works as a picture book author and her work has been published by Bloomsbury, Orchard, Nosy Crow and others. But she first trained as an animation director, making award-winning films and commercials after attending the National Film and Television School. This lead Leigh to work as Art Director on the first series of CBeebies’ ‘Charlie & Lola’.
In this session Leigh will talk about her background, how ‘Olobob Top’ came about, do a live drawing demo and share some cautionary stories about working on a TV series with her own children …
