The MEDIA Programme of the European Union has been supporting Europe’s audiovisual industry for over 20 years. It aims to build a strong competitive sector which produces content reflecting Europe’s rich tapestry of cultural diversity and to improve circulation of audiovisual projects across European borders and beyond.

Over €100 million a year is allocated to funding schemes for the development and production of audiovisual projects with international potential as well as for various networking and training opportunities which allow professionals to develop extensive networks of international contacts.

Animation and children’s film/programming are MEDIA priorities.  Over the years the Programme has invested in many European animation projects, including the UK’s ‘Gruffalo’s Child’, ‘the Hive’ and ‘Shaun the Sheep’.  Every year it provides support for Cartoon Forum, MIFA in Annecy and co-finances training programmes such as The Animation Workshop.

This session will provide an overview of the MEDIA programme and outline some of the funding schemes that are available to audiovisual professionals. We will also feature case studies from production companies working in children’s programming who have utilised various MEDIA grants and networking/training opportunities.

Going forward, the MEDIA Programme will become a part of a larger programme for creative industries, Creative Europe.  It will continue with largely unchanged priorities, but with more emphasis on the demand side of the value chain – i.e. audiences – and young audiences in particular.
