This session offers a contemporary cross-section of the kind of narratives available to young people through comics and graphic novels. From emotionally complex stories to wildly irreverent entertaining tales, there is much on offer for young people in 2010. Far from being an example of “dumbing down”, as is frequently claimed by conservative social commentators, the growth in the visual publishing sector affords new opportunities for understanding literacy as visual and complex. The session will look at the diverse ways in which contemporary visual and sequential literature can bring value to the lives of children and young adults.
