Karen Daniels, Senior Lecturer Primary English – Sheffield Hallam University

Karen is a Senior Lecturer in Primary and Early Years English at Sheffield Hallam University.   Prior to this her work included teaching primary and early years children in Rotherham.  Karen led school developments in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Literacy provision and also worked as an Early Years Outreach Teacher and Area SENCO and as a Children’s Centre Lead Teacher.  This advisory role included working with private, voluntary and non-maintained settings, and supporting practitioners with curriculum developments.

Karen’s main teaching is with Primary and Early Years trainee teachers, and focuses on Communication and Language and the development of early reading and writing.  Karen’s doctoral studies focus on meaning making and text creation by very young children within early childhood education settings.  She is interested in how Early Years teachers’ understandings of literacy influence enacted pedagogy.
