Head of BBC Children’s Acquisitions & Independent Animation
Jackie is Head of BBC Children’s Acquisitions and Independent Animation, working across both CBeebies and CBBC, the UK’s two foremost Children’s television channels. Jackie started her working life as a scientist, but thought better of it and made the natural career progression to animation in 1995 when she joined Hibbert Ralph Entertainment as a Production Assistant. She went on to produce many prestigious and award-winning specials and series in the independent sector before joining the BBC as Content Manager, then Executive Producer, for CBeebies, working on series such as as ‘Tree Fu Tom’, ‘Octonauts’, ‘Bing’, ‘Rastamouse’ and ‘Clangers’, before becoming Head of Acquisitions and Independent Animation in 2015.
BBC Children’s Acquisitions and Independent Animation pre-buys and acquires animation for children aged 0-16 based on ideas submitted by independent production companies.
For CBeebies we only pre-buy so we can tailor editorial to suit audience need and the tone of the channel, so please bring your ideas early! Ideas that inspire a child’s first steps toward big ideas resonate with us – examples include What’s the Big Idea? (a pre-school philosophy show) Octonauts (an action-adventure show based around teamwork and marine biology) and Messy Goes to OKIDO (introducing complex scientific ideas to a very young audience).
For 0-16 we pre-buy and buy programmes off the shelf. We’re on the lookout for fresh and exciting ideas for animation series with superb story-telling at the heart of the concept. In particular we are looking for high octane boys action adventure for 5-8 year olds, older skewing comedy and we are still on the lookout for ideas featuring strong funny female characters.
