Developing live-action teen drama for CBBC and Netflix in a world waking up to #MeToo, Black Lives Matter and a global pandemic.
Leading British writer/ creator Holly Phillips talks about adapting Gretchen McNeil’s YA novel ‘Don’t Get Mad’ into live action teen drama series ‘Get Even’ for CBBC and Netflix. Holly tells writer Dan Braham about her journey from reading the US novel, to setting the TV series in a UK school, putting together a writers’ room, and getting nominated for a Kidscreen award. Everything was set for Season 2 when COVID came along, and the show was shut down. But after a short hiatus, Holly and her team started over, re-developing the series with a new cast as ‘Rebel Cheer Squad’. Holly talks about adapting, creating, dealing with notes from both sides of the Atlantic, creating a diverse writers’ room, accessing your inner teenager, and much, much more.
