CMC 2014: Out of the Mouths of Babes – PREVIEW

Posted on: Monday 30 June 2014 12:28pm by Shirley Dent

Should access to social media be moderated or regulated for children? Session Producer Shirley Dent invites you to this session on Friday morning in Showroom Cinema 3: It’s official. Facebook still has – in the words of Stuart Dredge – BFF status with teens. According to the Forrester survey of US 12-17 year olds, three quarters of the young respondents use Facebook. Half reported they are using it more than they did a year ago. Social media, it seems, is here to stay –an indispensable, inescapable part of growing up. With children playing and participating in online communities such as Moshi Monsters, Bin Weevils and Club Penguin when they are still at primary school, social media presents children’s content providers…

CMC 2014: Whatever Happened to the Heroes? – PREVIEW

Posted on: Saturday 28 June 2014 12:25pm by Steve Smith

With a power-packed panel of execs from Disney, Turner, Nerd Corps and Hasbro, the mystical insights of researcher Nicky Goldstone, and overlording of Kidscreen's Jeremy Dickson, Whatever Happened to the Heroes? will interrogate the current landscape of hero genre animation and how it may be changing. Session producer Steve Smith invites you to don your tea-towel cape and come to Showroom Cinema 3 on Thursday. Your traditional cartoon heroes - the one's with their pants on the outside - are being challenged in a winner-takes-all, head-to-head face-off, by young comic upstarts - who to their credit generally keep their pants to themselves. We're asking what has caused this seismic shift in hero affection amongst 6 to 9-year-olds - is it that…

CMC 2014: Mini-Dragons: Kids as Commissioners – PREVIEW

Posted on: Wednesday 25 June 2014 4:05pm by Jon Hancock

Jon Hancock has bravely volunteered to produce the Mini-Dragons to investigate how the world would look if children's content was commissioned by, well, children. “Out of the mouths of babes” I’ve been to CMC for the last few years, and whilst I’ve always found it fascinating, I’ve wondered why we don’t have more (sometimes ANY) children actually involved in the conference.  I may be able to tell you why in 10 days time. I’m a firm believer that “out of the mouths of babes” come comments that can be any or all of the following: inspired, insightful, barmy, wise, hysterical, clever.  As a father of 4 children myself, I’m also battle-weary (I used to have hair) from competing with a bunch of children…

CMC 2014: Collaborating with Kids – PREVIEW

Posted on: Tuesday 24 June 2014 8:00pm by Olivia Dickinson

This year, for the first time at CMC, we have 35 local children coming along and getting involved in a Wednesday Workshop. Fearless producer Olivia Dickinson outlines what we can expect:  In the 4-hour workshop (from 1-5pm) on Wednesday July 2nd we have a panel of five experts from theatre, publishing, research and digital, each of whom will run a mini-workshop for adults and children to collaborate, play and learn alongside each other. The children will be asked to take the lead in shaping the ideas that come out of each mini workshop, and the adult delegates will be learning from the 30+ kids, aged 9-11. Adults who come along will pick two workshops out of a hat on the day…

CMC 2014: Telling Tales: Paper to Pixel – PREVIEW

Posted on: Monday 23 June 2014 8:33pm by Kat Woolley

Should we be thinking beyond the book? Producer Kat Woolley previews this session which explores how publishers and developers are using digital platforms to reach young children There is always such diversity at CMC, with brilliant workshops, panels, lunches and of course the delegates themselves. With so many delegates coming from such hugely differing areas of the children’s media industry, I wanted this session to bring a specific sector into the CMC spotlight - the publishing world. Coming from a start-up appbook developer and publisher, Box of Frogs Media, the topic of digital books is obviously a close topic. Most of us remember reading and being read to as children (and hopefully continued reading into adulthood!). In the last few years,…

CMC 2014: We couldn’t do it without you…

Posted on: Saturday 14 June 2014 1:38pm by Greg Childs

Greg Childs, Editorial Director of CMC opens this year's Conference blog with some thoughts on what makes it all work... CMC 2014 has come together as a result of the work of a huge volunteer army - the Advisory Committee guiding and shaping the conference schedule, over 40 volunteer producers from every corner of the industry, some who return every year, some new to the task (and realising just how demanding it is!) and of course our other teams such as the bloggers who will keep you in touch with every session, and our fantastic student helpers who make it all run smoothly.  We’re not only grateful to them all - we’re proud that they are part of the massive…

CMC 2013: Astrophysicist expands his horizons at CMC

Posted on: Monday 01 July 2013 1:05pm by David Ault

#TCMC What brings an astrophysicist to the conference? David Ault explains. Hi, I'm David Ault and I'm very excited to be coming to the CMC this year as a blogger. I'm just finishing my time directing The Big Bang East Midlands and West Midlands, helping young people get enthused in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and am looking forward to what comes next. My weekends are generally taken up with storytelling in theatres across the country, doing astronomy podcasting, or voice acting for internet-based audiodrama. My desire to come to the CMC comes from wanting to develop my own skills as a writer and blogger, but also to take my storytelling and acting to a new level, to find…

CMC 2013: Children’s Apps: Top 10 Trends

Posted on: Sunday 30 June 2013 11:39pm by Stuart Dredge

#TCMC 12.30 friday 5th July. Showroom Cinema 3. Stuart Dredge, whose producing Top 10 Trends in Children's Apps, has a warning to CMC delegates: don't assume every child has access to a smartphone or tablet in 2013, just because you work in the media industry – where everyone's child probably DOES have access to one.   According to Ofcom, 28% of 5-15 year-olds in the UK owned a smartphone in 2012, while 9% went online using a tablet. These devices are growing fast, but it's important not to get carried away with apps excitement. That said, pretty much every big children's brand – and hundreds of independent studios and developers – is releasing apps for kids in 2013, and trying…

CMC 2013: A bright future for kids?

Posted on: Saturday 29 June 2013 8:51am by Tim Jokl

#TCMC The Next 5 Years: Is the Future Bright for Children’s Media? Tim Jokl looks forward,,, Research Sessions 6 Thursday 4th July 2013 15:30 @ Showroom Cinema 1 Research Sessions 4 Friday 5th July 2013 14:00 @ Showroom Cinema 1 This research began early this year with CBeebies asking the clever types at BBC Research & Development what things might look like in 5 years’ time. A large chunk of our audience was suddenly trying to access CBeebies via Tablets. It got us wondering if other shifts were creeping up on us. We began a conversations with dozens of BBC Technologists about Tablets, Smartphones, IPTV, Games, HTML5, Storytelling, Apps, even good old-fashioned sitting at a PC, and built up a fairly robust picture of the years ahead. The big headline…

CMC 2013: Entering the Blob!

Posted on: Thursday 27 June 2013 9:35pm by Niel Bushnell

#TCMC Niel Bushnell is the latest member of the blogging team to look ahead to the CMC.... This is my first year as a blogger for the Children's Media Conference and, even before I've arrived, I'm exhausted! Too many late nights? Hardcore drink and drugs? Animation deadline looming with render glitches to fix? No, it's worse than that; I've just looked over the CMC timetable, and decisions make me very tired. I've been to the conference before, so I should really know what to expect. Even so it feels like I'm entering the jammy core of the Blob from the 1958 film of the same name - each year it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. My career has seen me…

Posted on: Wednesday 15 February 2012 6:37pm

The editorial content for the July Conference is under construction – and you can be part of this. We are still looking for session ideas – topics you think will excite and interest the delegates to CMC in July – they can be anything from a suggestion for a Creative Masterclass, to a debate on kids’ media policy. The Conference theme is“Ahead of the Game” so concepts around that broad tent-pole would be very welcome. Do you have a burning issue? Do you know stuff that you feel should be shared? Do you have you experience of an innovative approach, new methodology or focus on the future of kids and content that deserves wider understanding? Then CMC is the perfect…
