CMC 2015: Changing Minds

Posted on: Tuesday 30 June 2015 5:54pm by Tom Kenyon

CMC Learning Strand Editor, Tom Kenyon, on the new cross-overs between educational and mainstream media for kids. Children’s Media has always had a close relationship with learning.  If ever we needed a reminder of the impact this industry can have on children’s learning and development, Sesame Street – a show that was devised to answer the question ‘can television teach?’ - released evidence this year that watching Big Bird, Elmo and co had the same impact on pre-schoolers’ education as attending nursery school. The theme of this year’s CMC is change. The learning content industry has undergone a huge transformation over the last few years.   Our keynote is from a YouTube education destination with 15 million subscribers! Investment in educational technology is…

The format allows several producers an opportunity to present their creative ideas to a panel of four potential funders, and to pitch for financial investment while offering a stake in return.  Heckling from the audience comes as part of the package, while we watch the negotiations take place and the deals…

11 CMC Survival Tips

Posted on: Thursday 25 June 2015 1:41pm

Tony Cooke co-created CBBC’s ‘A Long Long Crime Ago’, and was a lead writer on two series of ‘Diddy Movies’, winning the BAFTA for Best Comedy 2014. His kids’ writing credits also include: ‘Scream Street’, ‘Danger Mouse’, ‘Floogals’, and ‘The Legend of Dick and Dom’. www.tonycooke.net This will be my fourth CMC in a row. I know this because I already have a pile of three Cartoon Network shoulder bags in my attic. Also, being a writer, it’s one of the few times I actually get to stay in a hotel ‘for business’ and I’ve just finished my 2012 stack of mini-toiletries, which I absolutely did NOT take home on purpose. This year it’ll be a little different for me,…

Write On

Posted on: Monday 22 June 2015 6:59pm

Jane Marlow on why the CMC is invaluable for children’s writers... I’m a TV scriptwriter - lots of soap, continuing drama, that kind of thing. But after dipping my toe in the water of storytelling for a young audience by writing some preschool books, I became smitten with the genre. I wanted to jump right in. With a splash. So I go right under and water goes up my nose. So I went on a course led by Thunderbirds/Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg writer Danny Stack about writing for children’s TV. One of the things Danny told us was go to the Children’s Media Conference. It will be invaluable. You’ll learn loads. That’s why I’m heading up to Sheffield on July…

Send your questions about the future of children’s media for the CMC Question Time session “Game Change” (09:30 – 10:30 Thursday 2 July) to greg@thechildrensmediaconference.com.   Session producer and Children's Media Foundation Board member, Jayne Kirkham, explains all… If I were to tell you why I attend the CMC, I’d probably say that it always feels like a shot in the arm or, as my gran would say, ‘a dose of salts’; my granddad would call it ‘a good mulching’. You could choose your own analogy but I think the CMC does all three of these things: it builds you up, flushes you out and makes you bloom, creatively speaking. Not just on a personal level but across the whole of…

CMC 2015: CMC: You Get Out What You Put In

Posted on: Wednesday 06 May 2015 11:21pm by Chris Banks

As CMC 2015 gets closer, we'll take advice on how to get the best out of the Conference  from the people involved - as delegates, speakers, sponsors etc... ...and at the same time we'll learn something about their "day jobs". Banks & Wag are award-winning London-based composers of music for media.  Their kids' credits include 'ZingZillas', 'Friday Download', 'Blue Peter', 'Newsround', and 'Wanda And The Alien'.  Most recently, they have written the score to the feature film 'Up All Night'. www.banksandwag.com Ah, the Three-Day Jolly, so beloved of media folk everywhere.   Whether it be the free merchandise, the inside info on future productions, or merely the thirty minute bath without a five-year old asking for help with their Lego, the Children’s Media Conference surely offers something for everybody. Getting to Grips with MIP

Posted on: Monday 10 November 2014 2:00pm

Angela Salt, Content Creator, Writer, and Creative Producer at Fun Crew attended MipJunior and Mipcom as a “CMC Ambassador” in October.  Here’s her take on the grand event. A few weeks ago I entered an online global competition to win a 'walk on the red carpet at Mipcom' including free registration. Thanks to a swell of support from CMC friends and stalwarts I came an un-embarrassing second and resigned myself to palely loitering in the pavement cafés of Cannes. Then, to my utter surprise and delight, the lovely people at The CMC and Reed Midem offered me guest registration for Mip Jr and Mipcom as a 'consolation' prize in return for me being an 'ambassador' for the conference and the…
