Michael Carrington was a founder member of the CMC Advisory Committee. Having been the first Controller of CBeebies, and subsequently Chief Content Officer at Cartoon Network and CEO of Zodiak Kids, he is now Director of the Entertainment and Specialist Division at the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
CMC asked several figures in the children’s media industry to choose their favourite moments from CMC Keynotes. You can see their choices in the Best Of… strand of CMC 2020 video content.
This is Michael Carrington’s recollection of CMC past…
“A big hello to you all planning to attend CMC 2020 Online. I’ve had a long and chequered history in the kids’ media industry but I’m certainly a long-term supporter of CMC from its earliest days as Showcomotion, right through to its evolution to become the leading conference that it is today, dedicated to the children’s industry.
As I reflect on those years I’m reminded of the excellent keynotes delivered by some amazing people. One in particular stood out to me. It was delivered by poet Lemn Sissay in 2016, just before I emigrated to Australia.
I remember he had the auditorium in stitches with his terrific sense of humour and perfectly timed delivery. But his speech was also moving and thought-provoking. Its important message wrapped up in the magic of poetry.
Lemn discussed migration, race representation, and his experience of growing up in care. He dedicated his speech to Floella Benjamin of ‘PlaySchool’ fame and describe how important it was to see a face just like his on the telly.
Interestingly, his message just a few years later is somehow even more important today. As programme-makers and other content makers we must be better at reflecting children’s lives, their culture, their backgrounds,. Recognising the diversity and richness of their world is so important in the work that we do. So I thank Lemn Sissay for a terrific keynote speech.
And I thank you for your dedication to the children’s industry. I love what I do. I hope you enjoy what you do. Have a great conference!”
