This year’s Focus on China, through our informative Q&A format, aims to help prepare you (producers, creatives, digital developers, distributors and anyone in between) for a leap into the Chinese market.

Breaking down the wall might not be easy, but if you can, there may be significant opportunities in China. Our panel of experts, led by moderator Alex Chien, will delve into their own experiences of working in the Chinese market from both a Chinese and International perspective.

Alex Chien, our moderator, brings 20 years’ experience in TV & Event Production, having worked for Nickelodeon, Disney and MTV and now running her own independent A4 Studios. She has worked both in the UK and China and has invaluable insights into the Chinese market from a very rounded perspective.

Maggie Liang, through her background working for Chinese broadcaster CCTV and experience running the UK-based Media Pioneers, will provide a co-production reality check with helpful dos and don’ts.

James Chen Gu, general manager of the animation studio at UYoung Media & Entertainment Group in China brings his perspective as a broadcaster in China working with overseas producers and will discuss the talent needs Chinese companies have.

Trevor Lai of Up Studios will explain how apps and other non-linear content is received by Chinese audiences and what opportunities lie ahead in digital.

Sharon Gomes Thomas, VP of Production and Business Development for Little Airplane, has first-hand experience as an international producer working on content in China.

Xin Yu, CEO of Left Pocket Media in Shanghai has also worked both in the UK and China and will provide her views of working with the West.

Dave Skwarczek is a writer and Producer, currently helping take the hit Chinese series “Two Two’s Big Dream” to a global audience as the series’ head writer. He will explain things creatives should consider when working with Chinese companies.

Session Producer, Leanne Passafonti (formerly Preston) also has experience working in the Chinese market for producers and broadcasters.

This is an interactive format with no formal presentations so you can expect plenty of opportunity to quiz the panel to tailor the session to your needs. Just be prepared to bring your game face, it’s the Wild West…or East, after all…
