Jon Hancock, Series Producer with CBeebies, will be returning again to the CMC as one of the blogging team. Here, Jon looks ahead to the conference, and back over his past year. Other members of the blogging team will be introducing themselves too in the run up to the conference in Sheffield.
I’ve worked in BBC Children’s for 13 years and in that time have had the pleasure of doing just about every type of Children’s TV there is. Since last CMC I’ve been involved in “Mr Bloom’s Nursery: Get Set, Grow” – an ambitious series taking Mr Bloom (housewives favourite) out on the road, filming at huge Bloom public events which attracted 30,000+ visitors … and creating “Swashbuckle” – a pre-school pirate themed physical gameshow – which will be hitting the screens the day after the conference finishes.
The thing I’m most looking forward to about the Conference is bursting out of the TV production bubble in which I inhabit. It’s a nice bubble, don’t get me wrong, but there’s embarrassingly little I feel I know about the industry as a whole and in the past the Conference has been a gentle mix of mass inspiration and mild paranoia that I know so little and don’t know where to start. But that’s the fun!
I don’t attend the conference – and I certainly don’t blog – because I think I know it all, I’m coming hungry to find insights into the audience that will surprise and inspire me, to hear the dos and don’ts of commercial and international ventures, and meeting people that will get the creative juices flowing.
So, in my blogs, you’ll get honest thoughts and an attempt to condense the best bits of what I’ve heard so you get something juicy even if you weren’t at the session … just don’t expect them to be written from a place of great authority or experience – unless the session happens to be about pre-school gardening and creating soft-play centre shipwrecks (which would be a GREAT session – one for 2014?).
